Taipei National University of the Arts (TNUA) has been offering world music courses since the early 1980s, and has invited famous Asian musicologist such as Jose Maceda (the Philippines) and Tran Van Khe (Vietnam) as visiting professors since the 1990s, starting the trend of world music teaching and research in Taiwan. In the past three decades, TNUA has purchased a considerable number of books and audio-video materials related to world music to fulfill the needs of teaching and research. However, the TNUA world music collection has not formed significant thematic features yet, and therefore it has not played an important role in facilitating related academic development. To form its thematic features of world music collection, TNUA should consider Taiwan’s geographic and cultural characteristics first. Geographically, Taiwan is in the intersection of East Asia and Southeast Asia. Its culture consists of Chinese culture from East Asian and Aboriginal culture related to Austronesian peoples in Southeast Asia and Oceania. In terms of geographic and cultural circumstances, Taiwan has occupied an advantageous position in undertaking studies of musics and cultures of Asia and the Pacific area. Therefore, TNUA’s world music collection should feature musics and cultures of Asia and the Pacific area. The bulk of TNUA’s existing books and audio-video materials in Asian and Pacific musics and cultures are related to East Asia, so that TNUA should expand its Southeast Asian and Oceania collection more enterprisingly to make its Asian and Pacific collection more complete. This project therefore emphasizes books and audio-video materials related to Southeast Asian and Oceania. TNUA will purchase these books and materials through booksellers, and, as a member of Asian League of Institutes of the Arts, the university will also obtain them through links of the League. By expanding Asia-Pacific music collection, TNUA is expected to become an important center for Asia-Pacific music study, to promote exchanges between Asia-Pacific institutes of the arts, and to facilitate the establishment of Asia-Pacific perspectives in Taiwan’s musicological community.
